Quadrio – Residential Building

We designed an urban building with an active retail ground floor that engages with the existing fabric of the organically developed city centre.

Residential buildings in Prague's historic centre were last constructed in any significant number in the 1930s and 1940s. That era produced a number of notable Functionalist buildings whose design and typology set a new direction in housing standards and lifestyle in general. The brief for a freestanding new-build residential building in the very heart of Prague, as stipulated by the regulatory conditions, represented an entirely exceptional commission in the present day.
We designed an urban building with an active retail ground floor that engages with the existing fabric of the organically developed city centre. The residential building stands as a freestanding structure on the corner of Purkyňova and Vladislavova streets, with its northern façade closing off the new square created as part of the development of the entire block.

The simple cubic volume has seven above-ground storeys and is encircled along its perimeter by bands of balconies and terraces; set into these horizontal planes are fully glazed 'aquaria' of living spaces, providing panoramic views of the surrounding streets.

The building is composed predominantly of maisonette flats, offering double-height living rooms with ceiling heights of up to 5.8 m. On the upper floors, the flats are complemented by internal outdoor atria, from which the rooftop amenity terraces with views of the city centre are accessed.
